The best of the NTSB
Some of the more unique NTSB aviation accident reports

From time-to-time I read briefs from the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) about airplane accidents. This isn't to quell some sadistic urge inside me, but to actually learn what to do and not to do in the event of an emergency. A great majority of accidents are Pilot Error, and some of them are, well to put it bluntly, rather amusing.

The FAA has a funny definition of "Pilot Error"... You could be on a perfectly normal landing approach when suddenly a 9.8 earthquake strikes opening up a large hole where the runway used to be, exposing a large alien ship that uses advanced photon lasers to shoot off your wings, causing you to crash in the hole, and the FAA would find it "Pilot Error" (You *didn't* have to be out flying that day says the friendly FAA Inspector, as he cites you in previous example).

Most of these stories aren't like that though (Thankfully). A lot of the ones I post should be nominated for the Darwin Awards. So, with that said, I have collected the more amusing (and some not amusing) stories and linked them here. Enjoy!

  • Student Pilot + Clouds + Poor Planning + Stupidity = Hilarity
  • Collision with a Deer on takeoff
  • Another Encounter with a Deer
  • "Hey, lets put on an airshow" says student pilot with 35 hours. Hilarity Ensues
  • Another Genius tries a low-altitude, high-speed maneuver
  • Alcohol + Aircraft + Padlocked Gust Lock = Hilarity
  • Using a Cessna 152 as a Implement of Suicide (Kinda sad)

More coming soon. If you see one or know about one that should be on here, let me know!
