Beezer Launches Custom Domains

You can now make your Beezer app fully your own, with a custom domain.

As many of you already know, Beezer is a platform that lets you simply and easily, with no coding or technical knowledge whatsoever, build your own Progressive Web App.

Beezer-built Progressive Web Apps provide the best blend between a normal website and a typical “native” app which you download from the app store. They are accessible via a simple URL, just like a website; and they work across both desktop and mobile. On desktop, they function just like a website – with the added benefit of on-screen notifications. But on mobile, they adapt to the device in order to look, feel, and function just like a native app. They offer a browser-less, app-like experience with engaging functionality like rich media content and push notifications. They can be saved to the home-screen of the phone, where they will look and behave just like any app from the app store – although they will take up far less device storage space.

In other words, Beezer-built PWAs give you all the slick mobile-first functionality of a typical app, with none of the cost and hurdles of developing an app to put into the app store.

You can build your own Beezer app easily, and fully customise it with your organisation’s own colours, images, and content. And now, with the release of the Custom Domain feature, your Beezer-built app will be even more customised to you.

What is a custom domain?

We mentioned that Beezer-built apps can be distributed directly, bypassing the app stores, via simple web link. This is one of the biggest benefits of Beezer: it lets you get your app straight into your customers’ hands where it belongs.

Up until this point, the link which your customers would receive, and click on to open your app, always ended with the domain “.beezer.com”. So, for instance, if your name was Jane and you were making an app for your cupcake shop, your app’s domain might be “janescupcakes.beezer.com”. But what if Jane didn’t want the word Beezer in that link? After all, the app is fully customised to Jane and her cupcakes – so shouldn’t the link be, too?

Now, it can be. With our Custom Domain feature, Jane can build her app, and then change the link to any domain which she owns. This means she can go to any domain-selling site, like GoDaddy, Domain.com, or BlueHost, buy the domain (in other words, the link) “janescupcakes.com”, and then update her app to make that the link for it. Now, when Jane sends her app out to customers, they never see Beezer enter the picture at all – just Jane, her cupcakes, and her app.

There are many benefits to having your own custom domain for your app. The list includes better personalisation, consistency and strength of branding, improved SEO, and more. You can read more about the benefits of custom domains here.

How do you customise your own Beezer app’s domain?

In order to replace the “yourapp.beezer.com” domain with a custom domain for your app, first you need to own the domain that you wish to use. You can buy a domain from any of a number of domain providers, for as little as a few cents per year.

Once you have your domain ready to use, you just have to follow a few simple steps to link it to your Beezer account and update the link for your app. We’ve outlined these steps in our Help article about Custom Domains; and, we’ve given you a step-by-step in the How-To video below.
